I am very excited to bring on this fan-requested episode with Amy-Marie Merrell, the Executive Director of The Cupcake Girls, a non-profit organization based in the USA providing confidential support to those involved in the sex industry, as well as trauma-informed outreach, advocacy, resources and aftercare to those affected by sex trafficking. The Cupcake Girls aims to help support sex trafficking victims and sex workers, distinctly drawing the line that these are two very different groups of people. We learn about how the Cupcake Girls came to be, Amy’s involvement with the organization and how it is quickly growing all across the USA and with future plans to expand into Canada and Mexico. Amy also addresses the dangers of non-profit organizations who have underlying motives with religious undertones and saviour-like stances on sex work. We also go into an in-depth explanation of why The Cupcake Girls stands for the decriminalization of sex work and why legalization and the Nordic models do not work or benefit our community.
